Before I Was a Mom

On my second Mother's Day, I sit and think about how being a mother has changed me.

Before I was a mom, I never knew that someone so tiny could flip your world around.
I didn't know how special it felt to nourish a hungry baby and take part in sustaining a life.
I hadn't yet experienced the ache of loving a child so much that you miss them when they sleep.
I had never been spit up on, chewed on or peed on.  All in one day.
I didn't know that I'd want to linger just a little longer to hum one more lullabye.
Before I was a mom, I thought the saying 'to be a mom is to have your heart go walking around outside your body' was a cheesy line.  I've learned it is true.
I had never laughed so hard at a daddy making up silly songs to calm a crying babe.
I wasn't content sitting in the middle of a messy living room filled with a tornado of toys and heavenly giggles.
I didn't know that the most ordinary of household items could provide hours of free entertainment.
Before I was a mom, I could come and go as I pleased.
I could have a lengthy phone conversation, free of noise or distraction.
I didn't have to schedule a date night with my husband.
I had never done a happy dance for a first smile, first words or first steps.
I had never known the amazement of the bond that a mother shares with her child.
I never knew what it meant to love someone so much that you would lay your own life down for them.
Before I was a mom, I had no idea that being a mother would be this GREAT!

Happy Mother's Day!
